My presentation explains how social media affects beauty standards of each individual. It hightens whats "accepted" and whats "not accepted".
Today’s society heavily relies on social media and many of the beauty standards displayed are unrealistic. Not only does unrealistic beauty standards cause low self esteem, it creates a sort of need to fit in constantly. Although natural beauty is starting to become frequently advertised, so is the “perfect body image.” Often times people don’t believe or get to see all the photoshop or unrealistic work that is put into advertisements and beauty videos. As a society we should be advertising all types of beauty rather than a “perfect” image. For example in a recent interview Selena Gomez said, “I realize everybody wants what they can’t have. But at the end of the day, what you have inside is much more beautiful than what’s on the outside.” I agree with Selena’s statement she makes a great point about beauty being a person's character. Oftentimes social media impacts the way a person views the self which can lead to discouraging thoughts in teens or anyone in general. Instead of promoting fake beauty we should be promoting beauty to love ourselves and to show beauty to all people.
Social Media also sets unrealistic beauty standards which affect people’s self esteem and can lead to mental illness. A study conducted by Tunku Adul Rahman University shows media advertises a certain body type or face shape tend to be more advertised, based off the desire of them. Models or actors are at times photoshopped making their waist or strong physique the “ideal” image. According to Medium.com another study shows it has an effect in younger ages in all genders. Teens have shown to use unhealthy supplements or diets in order to have an ideal body. Only 30 minutes of media can have a life altering impact on how a teen perceives their body. That is a huge impact in such a small amount of time. Not only is the media impacting the way we think of beauty but people also want to change to fit in. Media is everywhere and it’s never ending. However there are solutions we can provide in order to stop self esteem issues and unrealistic beauty images such as: positive feedback, Education, inspiration, Diversity, and realistic beauty standards. We can help society see that they’re beautiful just the way they are. They shouldn’t have to change in order to feel accepted. By making beauty standards reasonable we will be lowering depression rates, self esteem rates, possible misuse in harmful supplements and we will be encouraging a better image of beauty as well as better character and a more supportive society. I highly recommend for everyone to be kind to each other as well as being more positive and not comparing yourself to unrealistic body images. Be more natural and seek positivity.
