Dr. Joyce Armstrong Carroll, Ed.D. writes about "Starring" as a revision technique on page 16 of Dr. JAC's Guide to Writing with Depth. It's a fabulous strategy for taking drab to fab!

Here's the original writing:

Jonathan had come up with a brilliant plan. He wanted to see if his student council would help out cleaning the highways. He told the student council president about his new project he wanted to get started on. They quickly approved it. They had fun while cleaning. It benefited the earth, they cleaned bottles to food wrappings. It made a difference to the environment and the animals in it. (STAAR Scoring Guide, 2017, Expository 6

The strategy is based on a nursery rhyme:

Twinkle, twinkle - repeat

Little star - name and rename with specificity

How I wonder what you are - make conjectures and predictions, describe or explain

Up above the sky so high - give the context and setting

Like a diamond in the sky - make similes and comparisons

Here's some images of the things that the writer may choose do add to his/her composition:

He wanted to see if his Student Council would help out cleaning the highways...

Why did he want to clean up the highway?

How about adding a before and after?

What was the impact?

This strategy give some really great, concrete ideas to help writers think of ideas!
