1. Ask kids to retell a story orally or in writing. Their summary will "reflect what information - including inferences - was brought to mind during reading" (Oakhill, et al., 2015, 41). 

2. See if kids know the different kinds of inferences by asking different kinds of inference questions. 

3. See if kids can make inferences WHILE they read the text. 

4. See if kids are having problems with their processing speed.
