New Technology

The 1920s was a decade of new inventions. This was the time directly after World War I, and when soldiers were eager to return to a more prosperous life. To help them enjoy their new lives new technologies such as the radio, silent movies and Henry Ford's automobile industry were invented.

Top ten inventions-

1- radio/tv transmission(20)

The radio transmission allowed and allows us to hear music and use our phones. It also allowed us to do radio broadcasts. This is a useful device that we still use today.

2-band aid(20)

Earle Dickson made Band-Aid to tend to the injuries of his wife, who often cut herself while doing household chores. He worked in a gauzy factory and used tape to create the band aid. Him and his boss instantly put it into production.

3-lie detector(20)

Lie detector, or polygraph was invented by John A. Larson, a medical student, in California. The device measured the heartbeats and breathing rate of a person in order to check whether the person was lying or not. It’s still used today during many criminal investigations.

4-convertible(22)

Although there have been numerous modifications and developments to the design of convertibles, the credit for envisioning and making the first practical retractable manual hardtop system goes to Ben P. Ellerbeck in 1922. This was the start of an era for not only convertible but for cars in general. One of the first open topped cars.

5-camera(23)

The instant camera generates film images. Samuel Shlafrock invented this and it started something big. The camera helped develop many other photography items and helped develop technology.

6- gas chamber(1924)

The state of Nevada invented the gas chamber in 1924. There is ambiguity over who exactly came up with the idea of carrying out a death sentence through a gas chamber, but many historians believe that it was the State of Nevada. This invention eventually led to the holocaust being an impactful yet horrific invention in the 1920’s.

7- power steering(26)

Although numerous inventors had tried to build a fully-functional power steering system, it was Francis W. Davis, who invented the first practical power steering system. Power steering is still used today and it has been a big deal in the development of cars overtime. It is also a standard in modern cars today.

8- toaster(27)

Charles Perkins Strite invented the pop-up bread toaster in 1919, and received a patent for it on October 18, 1920. This was impactful because it was a big development over the semi-automatic toaster. It allows us to put, cook, and eject a piece of toast.

9-pressure washer(27)

Pressure washer was invented by Frank Ofeldt in 1927. It was very useful for people working in the construction industry as it made it easy to clean paint, grime, dust, etc., from buildings. It also found its use in car washing sector. Still used in modern times and can remove many tough stains.

10- bubble gum(28)

Bubble gum, or bubblegum, was invented by an accountant, Walter Diemer. In its first year it made over 1.5 million dollars and obviously is still used today. Bubblegum comes in all different flavors and sizes.
